The choir is made up of a group of St. Swithin's parishioners who simply enjoy singing. We lead the singing at the services each week in church, and at the festival services (Christmas, Easter and Harvest) sing a variety of appropriate music prepared specially for the occasion. There is no upper or lower age limit for our choir members. Our numbers are small at present and we would really like to have some more voices. If you can sing (in tune!).....why not come and join us?
We sing a wide variety of music......traditional Church of Ireland hymns, more 'modern ' hymns such as Getty+ Townend and Graham Kendrick pieces, we have used Taize music and we chant the psalms and canticles. We have sung John Rutter anthems and Michael Card's 'The Promise' as well as meditative Rizza music. We are fortunate to have enough singers to be able to sing in four parts or in unison....whatever the occasion calls for!
From September through to Easter, our choir usually practices once a week. We meet upstairs in the parish hall on Monday evenings from 7.30-8.30pm. We sing through the hymns for the following Sunday, practice the chants for the psalms and canticles and attempt to learn the anthems for the next 'big' service. Choir practice is not too serious an affair! We have a laugh too! We 'note bash' each part ie each of the four parts is taught their notes separately and then we try to put it all together. So, even if you don't read music, you get the opportunity to learn to sing in parts at the practices.
Our choir is robed, simply to make us all look the same!
We would very much like to build up the numbers in our choir. Have you ever considered coming to join us? If you can sing in tune....why don't you think about it? You don't have to be able to harmonise. You could either sing the tune or learn the harmony at choir practice. You don't have to be at every service or every practice. You come along when you can. Our aim is to help lead the singing in St. Swithin's, to sing God's praises and make a joyful noise onto the Lord. If you'd like to come join us (and remember, age doesn't matter!) or if you'd like any more information about the choir, please contact Lynn on 028 796 33669
